How can a mere mortal stay true to their humanity?

Over the past few years, you have probably heard a lot of noise about artificial intelligence – how it’s changing industries, reshaping jobs, and quietly slipping into the tools we use every day. For many people, this creates a nagging worry: “By using AI, am I sacrificing my own strengths, judgement and personality?”

The short answer is no. And the point of this article is to show that working with an algorithm doesn’t mean becoming one.

AI is very good at certain things: spotting patterns, organising information, and doing repetitive tasks without getting bored or distracted. But the modern workplace still runs on human judgement, empathy, creativity, and the ability to read a room – things no algorithm can genuinely replicate.

So, AI is great at bringing order to chaos with structure, consistency, clear steps, all the stuff humans don’t always enjoy. But it still needs you to decide what actually matters in a workplace full of real people and real emotions. That’s the bit no machine can fake. Rather than relying on AI to be a cold, logical terminator, you become the human interpreter who gives the tech meaning. The real opportunity is learning how to collaborate with AI tools instead of competing with them.

What follows are some examples of how, as humans, we should be thinking about AI algorithms supporting our work, protecting our time, and building on our strengths. In essence how we keep our humanity.


Machine vs Human

1. Email triage without losing your judgement

AI can scan your inbox, group similar messages, and highlight the ones that look urgent.
But you still decide which tone to use, which relationships matter most, and what the political or emotional context is.

Machine thinking: “These five emails look similar.”
Human thinking: “Yes, but this one is from the Chair, so it needs a careful reply.”


2. Drafting documents without losing your voice

AI can produce a first draft of a report, policy, or meeting summary.
But it doesn’t know your organisation’s culture, the personalities involved, or the subtle implications of certain phrases.

Machine thinking: “Here is a grammatically correct summary.”
Human thinking: “This sentence will land badly with Tony; I’ll rephrase it.”


3. Scheduling and planning without losing flexibility

AI can propose meeting times, spot clashes, or suggest the most efficient schedule.
But it can’t sense when someone is overwhelmed, when a conversation needs to happen sooner, or when a delay might actually help.

Machine thinking: “This is the optimal time slot.”
Human thinking: “Yes, but Sam has had a rough week – let’s give them breathing room.”


4. Customer service without losing empathy

AI can answer common questions instantly and consistently.
But when someone is upset, confused, or anxious, a human’s ability to listen, reassure, and adapt is irreplaceable.

Machine thinking: “Here is the correct answer based on the HR policy.”
Human thinking: “Let me understand what’s really worrying you.”


5. Data analysis without losing context

AI can spot patterns in spreadsheets that would take a person hours.
But it doesn’t know the politics behind a project, the history of a team, or the real-world constraints that make some options impossible.

Machine thinking: “The data suggests Option A.”
Human thinking: “Option A would cause chaos – Option B is more realistic.”


6. Creative brainstorming without losing originality

AI can generate ideas, slogans, or images at speed.
But it doesn’t know your audience, your humour, or the cultural nuances that make an idea resonate.

Machine thinking: “Here are 20 variations.”
Human thinking: “Number 7 is interesting. Let me twist it into something meaningful.”


The underlying message

AI is brilliant at pattern‑matching, speed, and consistency.
Humans are brilliant at judgement, empathy, nuance, and context.

“Thinking like an algorithm” simply means being able to apply structured, logical, and repeatable approaches to help you work more seamlessly with AI tools. It does not mean abandoning empathy, creativity and the wonderful messy human relationships which make up our society and give meaning to our work.

By learning to work with AI rather than against it, we humans can stay relevant, not by out‑computing AI, but by doubling down on the things algorithms can’t do. Now surely that’s something any mere mortal can get behind.
